All our teaching professionals teach Group Lessons and Private Lessons and cater to all skill levels and age groups.

Sherwood Lewis

Teaching Professional, USGTF

Sherwood joined GolfDC Academy team in 2010. Sherwood has been recognized for his teaching achievements as recipient of the GCS Player Development Award. He has also made it to the Top 50 Instructors by U.S. Kids' Golf.Sherwood has served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, and has also trained as an outstanding amateur boxer. He then developed a passion for Golf which led him to strive to become a Professional. Sherwood also holds a certificate from the International Golf Psychology Association. He teaches both group and private lessons.

Bill Chain

Teaching Professional. USGTF

Bill Chain joined the GolfDC Academy in 2015 with 34 years of golfing experience. Bill’s golf career started in the early 1980’s and fell in love with the sport after his first “swing and a miss”! Bill attended the acclaimed John Jacobs School of Golf in 1986 to improve his knowledge of the game. He continued to improve through research and instruction from other leading instructors in the DMV area. Bill coached and taught golf in the DC Public School System and was the first Golf Commissioner in the school system. Bill proudly worked with the Paul Berry Hook a Kid on Golf Program for 18 years and he was featured in the Washington Post for his advocacy of golf in SE D.C. Bill teaches both group classes and private lessons.

Leslie Duke

Teaching Professional, USGTF

Leslie joined the GolfDC Academy in may 2009 with 31 years of playing and 28 years of teaching experience.  He has been awarded Golf Magazine's Top 50 Instructor while teaching in Florida 2003 to 2005, as well as being awarded Golf Magazine's Top 25 Instructor in Florida 2005 to 2009. Leslie teaches both group and private lessons.

Vince Marvaso

Teaching Professional, USGTF

Vincent Marvaso has held his United States Golf Teachers Federation (USGTF) license since 2002. He has had the pleasure of working with some of the top instructors in the Metro DC area, as well as throughout the country. Over the years, he has learned that there is no universal golf swing that is perfect. Vincent prides himself in being able to help students find a comfortable swing that will fit an individual’s abilities.

Sean Moore

Teaching Professional, USGTF

Sean Moore is our newest instructor at The Academy and comes to us from the education field. He is USGTF certified at the associate level and specializes in working with beginning golfers who want to enjoy and embrace golf while viewing it from a larger scale and more broad perspective. He likes working with students who are newer to the game and want to enjoy the sport while not being bogged down with complex terminology or analysis. He has worked with players up through the intermediate level and has worked with golfers of all age groups. Prior to becoming a golf instructor, he was an Athletic Director in the private school system and coached for over 15 years in multiple sports across numerous ages ranging from elementary students through the Junior College level.

Ted Countee

Teaching Professional, PGA, Class A Member

Ted joined the GolfDC Academy in March 2014. Before turning pro in 1990 he had a successful amateur career winning four club championships with the Oxon Blades Golf Club and qualifying for the Public Links Championship. Ted has held Head Professional and teaching positions at a number of facilities on the east coast, including the Courses at Andrews AFB, the First Tee Program in D.C. and Maryland, the LPGA International in FL, and most recently at the Cottonfield Golf Club and Sugar Creek Golf Club in GA. Ted teaches both group and private lessons.

Kendall Thomas

Teaching Professional, USGTF Master

During his 15-year career as a golf professional, Kendall has given more than 50,000 lessons, receiving numerous awards and commendations. He is known for his adaptive teaching style, as he has worked with world class coaches and player on every level, including players from the PGA Tour, the NCAA, the American Junior Golf Association, professional athletes, and celebrities. Kendall’s influences include Ben Hogan, Butch Harmon, Mike Bender, Marius Filmalter, Sean Foley, Chris Aioki, “The Golfing Machine,” and others. Kendall’s teaching method is based on a science of motion in the golf swing that he developed from his years as an engineer and from thousands of experiences he has had training casual golfers and tournament players. Kendall teaches both group classes and private lessons.

James Kim

Teaching Professional, PGA

James joined the GolfDC Academy team in spring of 2013 with 22 years of playing experience in the US and Asia. He also manages the pro shop as Assistant Professional. James worked with Bridgestone Golf for 4 years working with golfers by fitting them with the correct golf balls and clubs. James worked with Titleist for a year distributing in Korea. James teaches both group and private lessons.

James is fluent and teaches in both English and Korean.

James McArdle

Teaching Professional, PGA Class A Member, &General Manager

James joined the GolfDC Academy in 2015 with over 20 years of experience in the golf industry managing golf operations at public, private, municipal, and retirement facilities. As the First Assistant Golf Professional at Army Navy CC, James worked alongside Golf Digest’s Top 50 Women’s Instructor M.J. Smith, LPGA, where he instructed  many junior golfers who have gone on to win numerous tournaments and state championships. His other experience includes being a Head Pro at Virginia Oaks, the lead instructor for The Nike Golf Learning Center, and the First Assistant at Hidden Creek CC. James teaches both group classes and private lessons.

Linda Steinholtz

Teaching Professional, USGTF

Linda joined GolfDC Academy in April 2014 with over 25 years playing experience. She is Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Certified which focuses on how the most common swing characteristics and loss of swing efficiency are directly connected to how the body is functioning. Linda is a volunteer mentor with DC teens in foster care, a Senior Government Consultant and a retired U.S. Army officer who is passionate for the game of golf. Linda teaches both group and private lessons.
