Green GolfDC

Congratulations to all three GolfDC Courses for being Recertified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Locations!  Read the Press Release announcing each course's achievement here.

Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Certification

Under the management of Golf Course Specialists, Inc., authorized concessioner of the National Park Service, all three golf facilities in the District of Columbia have achieved designation as a "Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary" through the Audubon Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, an Audubon International program.

"Golf Course Specialists, Inc. has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be commended for their efforts at each golf course property," said Jim Sluiter, Staff Ecologist, Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Programs.
"To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas," explained Sluiter.

Certification categories include:

  •  Environmental Planning

  • Wildlife & Habitat Management

  • Outreach and Education

  • Chemical Use Reduction and Safety

  • Water Conservation

  • Water Quality Management

Congratulations to the grounds maintenance teams at all three facilities on a job well done!

Audubon Green Golfer Pledge & Education

East Potomac and Langston Golf Courses have received national recognition for their participation in the Audubon Green Golfer Challenge, earning 2nd place and 3rd place honors respectively for the number of golfers who registered for the program's Green Golfer Pledge at the course. By completing the pledge, golfers show their support for "helping people help the environment".

The Green Golfer pledges completed by customers and employees at East Potomac, Langston and Rock Creek demonstrate that golf courses can take a leadership role, through education and outreach, by creating a “green dialogue” to help golfers be a positive force for preserving the nature of the game.

Congratulations to all three courses, and especially to those golfers who have pledged and play at these courses!

To take the Audubon Green Golfer Pledge at East Potomac, Langston or Rock Creek golf courses, visit the Pro Shop and ask for a pledge sign-up card.

I value the nature of the game and accept my responsibility to ensure that golf courses are managed in harmony with the environment. I pledge to:

  • voice my support for the environmental efforts undertaken at my course.

  • keep play on the course and stay out of natural areas. I will respect designated environmentally sensitive areas and wildlife habitats on the course.

  • take some time to appreciate the increased variety of native plants and wildlife on the course.

  • when using a cart, follow cart path rules to protect soils and grass.

  • repair ball marks and replace divots to keep grass healthy.

  • support consistent, true ball roll on greens, rather than speed. (Lower mowing heights are at the root of many grass and environmental problems.)

  • use trash and recycling receptacles appropriately and encourage others to do the same.

  • purchase environmentally-friendly products for my game.

  • encourage others to learn about the benefits of environmentally responsible management on the course and in their community.

  • encourage my golf course to participate in environmental programs, such as those offered by Audubon International.
